5th Decade: Hera Gallery

Jocelyn and Imogen Foye, Wall Flowers

Wakefield’s Hera Gallery is one of the country’s oldest continuously running feminist art spaces, organized in 1975, a time when women got little recognition in galleries, let alone museum settings. Across the bridge, Jamestown Arts Center currently has an exhibition featuring twenty of Hera’s current members. Like any group exhibit at any member gallery, the quality’s hit or miss and the subject matter is equally all over the place, though I did like Kathie Florsheim’s photographs of coastal damage, gallery director Tzu-Ju Chen’s explosive and highly reflective print, and Chad Amos Self’s three paintings, solid blocks of color adorned with paper pulp. (Through February 22)
