A blind white woman (Elizabeth Hartman) unknowingly falls for a black man (Sidney Poitier) in A Patch of Blue, a 1965 melodrama that included scandalous interracial kissing. Shelley Winters won an Oscar playing the girl’s crappy mother, but this was the biggest commercial hit of Poitier’s long career. This is the fourth weekly installment in Barrington Library’s Poitier retrospective, which wraps up on the 8th with In The Heat of the Night. The library’s auditorium was recently renovated, though it’s kind of a bummer that all their classic film screenings happen at 1pm on weekdays.
