No one is actually French in A Simple Favor, the trashy and wildly appealing new thriller from Bridesmaids/Spy/Ghostbusters director Paul Feig. But boozy PR executive Emily (Blake Lively) has a somewhat random fondness for Serge Gainsbourg songs, and mommy vlogger Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) walks around saying things like “Are you two trying to Diabolique me?” The whole movie plays like a grand tribute to François Ozon (Double Lover, 8 Women), whose characters always look their most gorgeous when revealing their unhinged family secrets. There are only a few moments – during the climax, weirdly – when Feig retreats into the slapstick mode he’s more comfortable with. (He made Bridesmaids and the Ghostbusters remake.) Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) co-stars.
