Philip Glass’s 1984 opera Akhnaten makes its Metropolitan Opera debut with countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo in the title role. (Here’s a funny Bloomberg article about Costanzo’s side hustle in fancy workout equipment, a result of his character’s five minutes of on-stage nudity.) The pharaoh tried to bring monotheism to his kingdom, with tragic results. J’Nai Bridges plays Nefertiti, Akhnaten’s more instantly recognizable wife. Expect juggling (lots of juggling, apparently) and a score that features a little bit of English and a lot of singing in ancient Egyptian and Hebrew.
The encore presentation of the live simulcast happens at Showcase Cinemas Warwick (1pm) and Regal Cinemas Swansea and Bellingham (1pm and 6:30pm). Regal Cinemas screenings are $25; Showcase Warwick is $29.
