The Avon’s schedule has been pretty baffling this summer, and the trend continues with American Animals, a teen heist drama that’s actually out on DVD this Tuesday.* Based on a true story, the movie follows four Kentucky college students as they attempt to steal a rare book – Audubon’s Birds of America, valued at about $12 million – from a library at the oddly-named (but real) Transylvania University. Documentary director Barry Layton, in his first feature film, mixes staged re-enactments with interview footage of the real-life criminals. The cast includes that spooky kid from The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Aunt Lydia from The Handmaid’s Tale, and – briefly – Udo Kier.
*It crested in late June; as of last week the MoviePass-distributed feature (lol) was only playing at five theaters in the country.
American Animals plays daily at 3:55 and 8:30.
