I have a proposal for next summer. Seemingly every local theater company does some variation on Shakespeare in the Park each summer, so why not some sort of counter-programming? I’m thinking Ibsen in the Air Conditioning, where a local troupe stages a production of Peer Gynt in, I don’t know, let’s say the frozen foods aisle of a Stop and Shop. I’m serious, I think this could work. In the meantime, Contemporary Theater Company continues its Shakespeare on the Saugatucket series with Antony and Cleopatra, Shakespeare’s complicated Roman/Egyptian tragedy that picks up Antony’s story after the end of Julius Caesar.
