Apollo 11

neil armstrong apollo 11

The year’s only half over, but so far my bet for the year’s best film is Todd Douglas Miller’s Apollo 11, a documentary that drops viewers in 1969 without any superfluous historical commentary or memories from talking heads. It takes humanity’s weirdest achievement and really brings it to life, even though a significant chunk of the film is just men in ties smoking cigarettes while they stare at giant old-timey computer screens. We also know that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins are going to make it home just fine, but that doesn’t stop it from turning into a real nailbiter.

Family-friendly activities (stomp rockets!) begin at the Temple to Music at 7pm and the film begins at sunset, which these days is about 8:20.
