Indian artist Ashwini Bhat toured as a professional dancer and also received a master’s degree in literature before she ultimately settled into ceramics. Her hand-built clay sculptures are rather hard to pin down, abstract and slightly wonky-looking forms that call out for close inspection. As Arch Contemporary’s fall artist in residence, Bhat focused her hands on matrikas, multi-colored forms roughly two feet tall that are inspired by a cluster of voluptuous Hindu warrior goddesses.
