With black and white sets and costumes inspired by Picasso, Ballet Hispanico’s 2014 production of CARMEN.maquia gets an encore performance on the big screen. Originally performed in Chicago in 2012, Gustavo Ramírez Sansano’s ballet chronicles the tragic romance of a seductive gypsy and a naïve soldier. (The odd title combines Carmen with tauromaquia, what Spaniards call “the art of bullfighting.”) The performance is followed by Ballet Hispanico’s more recent production of Club Havana, a logical choice now that everybody’s obsessed with Cuba again. Originally produced in 2000, the popular show incorporates Latin styles into a plotless formal dance.
