Basketball: A Love Story

Jackie MacMullan

Professional basketball is a seven billion dollar a year industry, and NBA viewership has spiked in the past year, thanks largely to younger fans. Author Jackie MacMullan knows a lot about basketball. Covering the NBA, she was the first female sports columnist at the Boston Globe, before moving on to Sports Illustrated and more recently ESPN.com. She’s written four previous books about the sport, and is the first and only female recipient of the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Basketball Hall of Fame. Now she’s co-author of Basketball: A Love Story, a sweeping oral history of the sport that includes interviews with many, many, many players (Kobe! LeBron! Magic!) and coaches from the NBA, WNBA, and NCAA. The publisher says it’s “a definitive oral history and something far more literary and intimate,” and say it “may be the most ambitious basketball book ever written.” She’ll discuss the book and tell some behind the scenes stories with Diary of a Wimpy Kid creator Jeff Kinney. (The pairing is less weird than it sounds; he owns the bookstore.)
