Tony Cokes, Black Celebration (1988)

Magic Lantern Cinema presents three older shorts, each of which centers around key moments in black radical history. Tony Cokes’s 1988 film Black Celebration: A Rebellion Against The Commodity juxtaposes footage of riots during the civil rights movement with written texts by Barbara Kruger, French situationists, and even Depeche Mode, whose 1986 album gave the video its title. Christina Choy and Susan Robeson’s Teach Our Children looks at the societal implications of the 1971 Attica prison rebellion, while Madeline Anderson’s 1970 documentary I Am Somebody centers around striking black female hospital workers in Charleston, South Carolina.
