Black: color/ context/ meaning

black at RISD's Gelman Student Exhibitions Gallery

The color black takes center stage in an exhibition at Gelman Student Exhibitions Gallery, wedged in-between the RISD Museum’s North Main Street lobby and, uh, the rest of the museum. Curated by MFA student Sarah O’Brien, the show features work by roughly twenty artists, each of whom was asked to select a word describing their use of the color black. Written descriptions elaborate on piece, a sometimes helpful exercise in a show that incorporates work across various media, from photography and painting to jewelry and furniture. Color theory, race, and history collide in an intriguing show. (Through January 19)
