A woman in a rut takes up running in the well intentioned but horribly executed Brittany Runs a Marathon, a film that can’t decide whether to be a mumblecore rom-com or an inspirational sports movie. The trouble might be Brittany (Jillian Bell) herself. The character and her journey are hardly interesting enough to sustain a 103 minute movie, particularly when writer-director Paul Downs Colaizzo refuses to actually engage with his subject matter. (Brittany’s weight loss journey is handled superficially but sympathetically, though there’s no interrogation of, say, a doctor telling his brand new patient to drop 25% of her body weight.) Brittany’s friends – gay sidekick, toxic roommate, flirty co-worker, bougie neighbor – each come with their own handy subplot, all of which are either hastily resolved or forgotten altogether.
Brittany Runs a Marathon is currently playing at Avon Cinema, Jane Pickens Theater, and Mystic Luxury Cinemas.
