The inaugural Rhode Island Black Film Festival takes place this weekend, with a handful of screenings at several venues around the city. Most of the films are documentaries, but fans of old Hollywood should check out Vincente Minnelli’s 1943 musical fantasy Cabin in the Sky. A gambler is shot in an argument, but he gets a six-month extension on life while God and the devil fight over his soul. It stars an all-black cast including Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and comedian Eddie “Rochester” Anderson. Local actress and performer Rose Weaver will be on hand to discuss Waters, who stars as the man’s pious wife.
