It’s been almost five years since New Jersey’s Cakes Da Killa first popped up with his aggressively gay, breathlessly rapped Easy Bake Oven EP. Debut single “Whistle (Beat It Up)” referenced golden showers, protein facials, face sitting, and all manner of other things that might, uh, alienate him from other male rappers. This past October he released his first full-length album, a brief but frantic collection called Hedonism that finds Mr. Da Killa targeting a more mainstream audience. (Adult Swim and Red Bull promoted the animated video for “New Phone (Who Dis),” which is no less gay but only like 20% as raunchy as earlier efforts.) Cakes is touring with rapper Mykki Blanco, whose recent “High School Never Ends” is a symphonic epic – literally, the string section from the Paris Opera was on it – which you might remember from our Best Music Videos of 2016 list.
