Catherine Chung’s novel The Tenth Muse is the story of Katherine (with a K), a septuagenarian mathematician trying to figure out her place in the world. Intrigue abounds: a disappearing mother, a mysterious notebook, and a lot of secrets from World War II unravel on several continents. It’s the sort of novel that every reviewer is obligated to call “sweeping,” and it’s already popped up on a couple of Best Books of 2019 lists. Out of State Plates is a literary series that features authors writing from their work but also discussing the inner workings of the writing process. Chung will be discussing her craft with series founder Sarah Frye.
