Laura Dern plays a lawyer tasked with guarding a client who’s increasingly crazed about his workplace injury. Michelle Williams tries to broker a new house for her messy family. Kristen Stewart teaches education law to teachers, all but one of whom are totally bored. (Newcomer Lily Gladstone is that one student.) Set in Montana, the film’s three chapters are each based on a short story from Maile Meloy’s 2009 bestseller Both Ways Is The Only Way I Want It. The movie was adapted, directed, and edited by Kelly Reichardt, known for her slow-moving, actor-friendly approach to filmmaking.
