Word on the street (and, okay, in Facebook messenger) is that the play to see right now is Lucas Hnath’s The Christians, an Obie-winning drama about a megachurch pastor, which Epic Theatre Company is staging in an actual church. The playwright, raised in an evangelical household in Orlando, was intentionally vague about his own beliefs while doing press for the show’s 2016 New York run, because he wanted people to engage with the material rather than using their pre-existing judgments to cloud their opinions. (Epic previously did a very good job staging Hnath’s Red Speedo at the Pawtucket YMCA.) Geoff Leatham plays Pastor Paul; Vince Petronio directs. The show runs for five performances only.
