There’s an underrated episode of the X-Files where Mulder and Scully travel to a small Kansas town because the weather is secretly being controlled by a lovesick meteorologist. It’s a romantic comedy/drama/sci-fi hybrid, a genre mashup you don’t see too often, but that’s also what Nacho Vigalondo tries with his latest film. Polarizing human Anne Hathaway stars as a depressed American party girl who somehow controls the Godzilla-like kaiju monster that’s terrorizing Seoul. (It might also be a metaphor for Gamergate?) Reviews are positive – “a bizarre thrill ride disguised as an indie drama,” says The Atlantic; “it’s pretty weird but you’ll get used to it,” raves Wired.
