Tenor Javier Camarena is scoring raves for his performance as Tonio in Gaetano Donizetti’s comedic La Fille du Régiment, which was simulcast live to movie theaters on Saturday and which is being broadcast a second time on Wednesday. The aria “Ah! mes amis” gives Camarena a chance to hit nine high Cs, and he’s so good at it that he’s been doing encores. Soprano Pretty Yende plays an orphaned girl raised by an entire army regiment, and Camarena is the man she falls in love with. Actress Kathleen Turner makes her operatic debut as the (non-singing) Duchess of Krakenthorp. (If you saw RGB, it’s the same part that Justice Ginsberg played.)
