The Dorian Wind Quintet’s been around since 1961, and over the past half-century or so the New York chamber ensemble has commissioned over forty original works. This evening’s contemporary program features a selection of those commissions, pieces by Billy Childs, Richard Rodney Bennett, Bruce Adolphe, George Perle, and Lee Hoiby. (Perle’s Wind Quartet no. 4 won a Pulitzer in 1986, a first for any wind quintet.) It’s an unusually contemporary program for Rhode Island Chamber Music Concerts, whose programs tend to be a little more canon-driven.
