Dr. Strangelove

Dr. Strangelove returns to theaters

Director Stanley Kubrick relied heavily on literary adaptation for much of his early career, although interestingly his films work equally well whether the source material was great (Lolita) or tedious (A Clockwork Orange). With Dr. Strangelove, Kubrick took a joyless pulp thriller about nuclear panic and turned it into a zany Peter Sellers comedy about nuclear panic. Released two years after the Cuban Missile Crisis and two months after John F. Kennedy’s assassination, the anarchic but grim Cold War satire was a commercial and critical hit. It even got nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. (It lost to My Fair Lady.)

Dr. Strangelove (the full title is Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb) screens at 2:00pm and 7:00pm at three local locations: Showcase Cinemas Providence Place, Showcase Cinemas Warwick, and Regal Swansea Stadium 12)
