“My Dear Fellow Clergymen,” begins Martin Luther King Jr’s Letter From Birmingham Jail, a seven thousand word essay written originally in the margins of newspapers and whatever other scraps of paper Dr. King could sneak into his cell. He was addressing critical white Alabama church leaders, and in the letter he goes on to outline his beliefs in peaceful protest and direct-action marches. “I can assure you that it would have been much shorter if I had been writing from a comfortable desk,” King says at the end, “but what else can one do when he is alone in a narrow jail cell, other than write long letters, think long thoughts and pray long prayers?”
