Cape Verdean singer Elida Almeida was discovered by producer José da Silva, the same guy who in the 1980s brought Cesaria Evora to the world’s attention. Now 26, the singer released her third album Kebrada as a tribute to her island hometown. She’s something of a sensation in world music circles, where her take on airy, upbeat koladera music has led her to play festivals around the world. she’s recently played festivals in Canada and Norway. Musically, she uses traditional sounds (funaná, batuque and tabanka), but aims to reach younger audiences who might be distanced from that type of music. Fellow Cape Verdean Hélio Batalha co-headlines.
