A bustling family prepares for a big wedding at the opening of Everybody Knows, the first Spanish-language film from celebrated Iranian director Asghar Farhadi (A Separation; The Salesman). The film takes its time setting up its premise – the bride’s niece will go missing before the night is over – and once she’s gone the tension doesn’t necessarily pick up all that much. At a certain point, the film becomes less about the missing girl and more about the rightful ownership of a vineyard. Even the left field reveal of where the girl went comes at an odd moment, seemingly to minimize suspense. The wine country is quite pretty, though, and real-life couple Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz are fun to watch in just about anything.
Everybody Knows is currently playing at Showcase Cinemas Providence Place, Jane Pickens Theater, and Mystic Luxury Cinemas
