Richard Linklater’s follow-up to Boyhood takes a while to hit its stride, with many heavy-handed reminders that 1980 looked very different than 2016. There are also sixteen basically interchangeable college baseball players to keep track of. Set over a couple of days, Linklater’s created an alternate universe where college baseball players are enjoyable to be around, and where the only real crime with any consequences is a refusal to let the moment go.
(Side note: I have no idea why it’s only playing at the Warwick Mall.)
