Rock trio Ex Hex debuted to much acclaim in 2014. Led by Mary Timony, best known for her work in the band Helium, the album Rips featured punchy songs with sharp hooks and crunchy guitars. Five years later, follow-up It’s Real shares a fondness for power pop and echo pedals, though it’s a little less urgent, landing sonically somewhere between Matthew Sweet and early HAIM. It’s the kind of upbeat guitar rock that you will never, ever hear on the radio. LA’s Frankie and the Witch Fingers opens.
