The original off-Broadway production of The Fantasticks ran non-stop for a record-breaking 42 years, from 1960 to 2002, thanks largely to an airy script and an inventive score full of catchy songs. A boy and girl fall in love despite the wishes of their feuding parents (who aren’t really feuding at all, it turns out). Young Isobel McCullough is perfectly cast as dippy Luisa, a button maker’s daughter who convinces herself she’s a princess. She’s got the toughest singing role but (thankfully) also has the pipes to back it up. Amelia Giles also excels as El Gallo, a roaming bandit in fancy pants who doubles as the show’s narrator.
