Mississippi-born artist Felandus Thames is lecturing about his work, much of which deals with being black in America. In the BLK BOX series, for instance, grids of children’s wooden blocks have been painted chalkboard gray, each spelling out racially charged quotes from various sources (Mark Twain, NWA, etc.) His recent Whereabouts Unknown installation in New Haven looked at the incarceration crisis: the gallery featured its own solitary confinement cell, while photos of anonymous black boys literally dissolved in hair relaxer over the course of the show’s run.
