The 90s revival of 2019 continues with Epic Theatre Company’s season opener, Anna Deavere Smith’s Fires In the Mirror: Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and Other Identities. The 1992 play is about the previous year’s Crown Heights riots, a deadly clash between the neighborhood’s black and Hasidic residents. Originally produced as a one-woman show and based on actual interviews, this version features fifteen performers taking on monologues by nearly thirty interviewees, from Haitian teenagers to Angela Davis and Rev. Al Sharpton. I haven’t seen the production yet, but Motif liked it.
