An epic melodrama based on a sizzling bestseller, the film version of From Here To Eternity toned down a lot of the details – the famous Burt Lancaster/Deborah Kerr beach makeout session was originally full-on sex, if that wasn’t obvious, and the club everybody goes to was totally a brothel. But this was 1953. So instead there’s Donna Reed, who won an Oscar playing against type as a prostitute who falls for a pacifist soldier (Montgomery Clift) in Hawaii right before the bombs hit Pearl Harbor. Frank Sinatra took home an Oscar, too; the movie won eight in all.
This one’s showing at Showcase Cinemas (Providence Place and Warwick only).
