Alison Bechdel’s excellent graphic memoir Fun Home inspired Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori’s Tony winner, a decade hopping show that claims to be the first Broadway musical to ever feature a lesbian protagonist. (The Color Purple, though?) Raised in a funeral home (fun home!) by a gay mortician and his wife, Small Alison is a prepubescent girl who won’t wear dresses. In college, Medium Alison comes out and falls in love for the first time. Adult Alison (played by former Miss America Kate Shindle) hovers over it all, attempting to piece together her the various gaps in her complicated family story.
