Gaia, Still Here

Gaia Still Here

Completed in early September, Baltimore artist Gaia’s downtown mural depicts Narragansett educator Lynsea Montanari holding a photo of Princess Red Wing. Founder of the Tomaquag Museum, the state’s only museum dedicated to indigenous culture, Princess Red Wing was an influential woman who once spoke before the United Nations. The mural is fairly straightforward, and despite the deer and the strawberries it’s not all that far removed from Mary Beth Meehan’s looming photographs scattered around the red of downtown. Located on Custom House Street – the side of the Knead Donuts building – the mural is visible from across the river, and serves as a daily reminder that Rhode Island has an active native community, even in the cities. (Coincidentally, I’m currently reading Tommy Orange’s recent novel There There, which is about that very subject.)
