There’s a scene in Gloria Bell where the title character, who already wears big glasses, visits an optometrist and gets some annoying news that’s not particularly relevant to the plot. It’s there so we can see how Gloria (Julianne Moore) reacts. Light on plot but heavy on characterization, the film is full of these specifically placed details, like how Gloria ends voicemails to her kids (“It’s your mom”). Set in a fantasy world where there are discos for people in their 50s, the film is really about lines of communication and how people can and can’t interact with one another. Moore dominates the film, but she’s surrounded by 90s holdovers like John Turturro, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and the brother from Everybody Loves Raymond.
