Scheduling conflicts mean that I probably won’t make it to Head Trick Theatre’s chamber musical Goblin Market, though it’s one of the shows I was most looking forward to this spring. (It’s also one of the first shows in AS220’s newly renovated Black Box.) Based on an 1860 poem by Christina Rossetti, the fairytale is about two sisters tempted by the luscious fruits peddled by a roaming fleet of goblin men. One of the sisters tastes the fruit, which is of course a terrible idea, and things go downhill from there. Originally performed as a musical in 1985, the flashback-framed show draws its lyrics directly from Rossetti’s text; two actresses play both the sisters and the goblins, accompanied by a small chamber ensemble. Broadway World, the only outlet that’s reviewed this production to my knowledge, declared it “fantastic and fantastical.”
