Broadway’s first on-stage lesbian kiss took place way back in 1923, during a scandalous Apollo Theatre production of Sholem Asch’s God of Vengeance. (The incident led to the arrest of sixteen people on charges of indecency, and also inspired Paula Vogel’s recent hit Indecent.) Originally written in Yiddish in 1907, God of Vengeance looks at an unconventional family: Yekel, the partiarch, owns the brothel below their apartment. His wife was formerly one of his employees. Their daughter, the marriageable Rifkele, has begun a relationship with one of the women of the brothel. Performed (in English) with a cast of ten, Head Trick Theatre’s production concludes their season of “plays by, and about, the people marginalized by policies and rhetoric that repress difference.”
