Local legend H.P. Lovecraft first described his fictional god Azathoth as a “boundless daemon… whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.” Not just any old flutes—ACCURSED flutes. Roughly a century later, fans of the adjective-happy horror writer came up with
Goodnight Azathoth, plopping this monstrous nuclear chaos into the realm of Clement Hurd’s Goodnight Moon illustrations. Illustrator Christina Rodriguez is based in Providence, and she’ll be reading from and talking about the book.
