Contemporary Theater Company is wrapping up a month-long run of Hamlet with a one-night-only candelit staging that requires “special permission and careful arrangement from the Fire Marshal” (according to the press release) as well as an on-site fire detail.* The production will recall indoor productions from the centuries before electric light existed, while a lack of period costumes will keep the production grounded in the present. Early, electrically lit performances got great reviews: “Tammy Brown was born to play Hamlet,” declared Broadway World, while the South County Independent praised director Christopher Simpson’s nuanced vision, “one that is both delightfully challenging and accessible to the spectator.”
*I believe this is why the ticket price is so much higher than usual.
