The original Broadway production of Harold and Maude ran for just four performances in 1980, but it’s a smart play, adapted more or less faithfully by Colin Higgins from his own screenplay. Fans of the 1971 film will be pleased to know that Harold is still is somber nineteen-year old and Maude is still a kooky widow on the eve of her eightieth birthday, but the stage version is considerably lighter and zippier than the brooding film. Evan Kinnane and Isabel O’Donnell are both excellent in the title roles. Credit is also due to resident costume designer Ron Cesario, who certainly has an eye for the fabrics of the early 1970s.
