A huge hit in Mexico, Nicolas Lopez’s Do It Like An Hombre is the sort of coming out comedy that fell out of fashion here about twenty years ago, after Hollywood’s brief nineties flirtation with gay movies that weren’t somber historical dramas. (The Birdcage years, let’s call them.) When Santiago finally comes clean about his sexuality, both his Bridezilla fiancée and his loutish best friend take it very badly, the latter taking it upon himself to cure the “problem” via a ridiculous series of setups. There’s a lot of R-rated butt jokes, as you’d expect, though overall it’s quite tame compared to many recent American comedies. It’s a curious artifact but hardly essential.
