There’s something really homespun about Detectives, the recent five-song EP by Monika Heidemann (aka just plain Heidemann). The bedroom confessional was once reserved exclusively for folk singers and Morrissey enthusiasts, but these days that lovelorn DIY feeling is better (and more often) expressed by solo artists like Heidemann, and it’s easy to imagine her recording these ramshackle dance-pop songs alone under some sort of poster shrine to Kylie Minogue. She plays Machines With Magnets along with noodly Providence synth duo JJAAZZ, poppy Bellerophon, and the clubby Julia. (Note: I’m sure there’s a cover, I just don’t know what it is.)
