Idris Goodwin’s Hype Man is a timely but ultimately really frustrating play. The shooting of an unarmed black teen is discussed in a recording studio by an up-and-coming white rapper (Jeff Hodge), his hype man (Phoenyx Williams), and a female producer (Helena Tafuri) who opts not to identify with any one race. They’re all about to make their big splash on the Tonight Show stage, but one of the trio veers from the plan and relationships are tested. The on-stage raps actually work, but that doesn’t make up for a didactic play where the characters learn lessons but never really grow.
