I, Tonya is a remarkably prickly satire that’s as much about our cultural collective memory as it is about the rise and spectacular fall of Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding. The things we remember – “the incident” with Nancy Kerrigan, the broken skate lace – are actually way less important to the narrative than the people we’ve forgotten: Tonya’s crazy awful mother and her crazy dumb bodyguard, for instance. Uncomfortably, violently zig-zagging between comedy and tragedy, the screenplay constantly reminds us that we’re watching a movie, and that no one involved in the story agrees on any of the facts. The acting is great and the actual skating scenes are dizzying and incredible.
