Cymbeline is one of Shakespeare’s most complicated plays, and I don’t just mean the plot, which is way too involved to explain here. Part comedy, part tragedy, it’s rarely produced primarily because no one seems like it very much. (A trailer for a 2014 movie adaptation, one I’d never heard of before today even though it stars Milla Jovovich and Dakota Johnson, calls it “Shakespeare’s undiscovered masterpiece”.) Contemporary Theater Company are staging the play (retitled Imogen, since she’s essentially the main character) as part of their free outdoor Shakespeare on the Saugutucket festival, which runs Sundays and Wednesday nights throughout August.
