America’s most beloved film about the impact of suicide gets a free screening because it’s Christmas and for some reason people think this is a feel-good family film. I first saw it on TV as a teenager, expecting a hokey mess but instead finding a really well-crafted downer featuring one of Jimmy Stewart’s best performances. Who knew? This one’s as much for the Christmas haters as it is for the yuletide cheer crowd.
