Jackie is absolutely stunning, a portrait told mainly in close-ups of a media-savvy widow trying to keep it together in the immediate aftermath of her husband’s assassination. The film assumes the audience has basic knowledge of what happened – President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas in November 1963 – but doesn’t bog itself down with facts or history lessons. Natalie Portman chainsmokes through her grief while consulting with family friends who aren’t properly introduced: the painter Bill Walton (Richard E. Grant) and social secretary Nancy Tuckerman (Greta Gerwig), as well as an unnamed priest (John Hurt!) and an unnamed journalist (Billy Crudup).
