Haitian-born playwright Jean-René Lemoine has lived in Paris since 1989, where he’s won all sorts of major awards for his work. He comes to URI, where he and students will perform an English translation of his 2009 play Erzuli Dahomey, Goddess of Love. My seven years of French study have atrophied to the point where I honestly can’t read any writings about the play, but the URI blurb says that “the play summons a Haitian voodoo goddess, a lost African phantom and the deceased Lady Di in a Chekhovian melodrama that speaks to the historical anxieties of contemporary France.”
