Noted artist Jeffrey Gibson is giving a talk at RISD. Gibson is a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw and also half Cherokee, and his work branches into two seemingly incompatible directions: bright sculptural pieces that ironically remark on living between western and native cultures, and geometric abstract paintings. They’re both very good, but the louder sculptural pieces are more immediately eye-catching, including an ongoing series of repurposed Everlast punching bags covered in beaded slogans (“Know Your Magic Baby”; “I’m Not Perfect”).
The talk is open to the public but maybe allow yourself a few extra minutes to get in the building.
