Jenny Zhang

Jenny Zhang’s linked story collection Sour Heart arrived amid much hoohah in 2018, near the dawn of the era when book jacket designers wanted every title to look like bathroom graffiti. The collection features eight stories about Chinese-American girls with their parents (and often a brother) in New York City, and by all accounts it’s pretty gross; the first story, for instance, begins with the girl and her parents picking roaches off themselves as they wake up. In interviews, Zhang has some interesting points about literary fiction and whether or not it matters if an author is writing autobiographically. She’ll discuss her work, including a forthcoming poetry collection, at a public event presented by Brown’s Literary Arts department. It’s one of three events they’re doing this week. (Xandria Phillips reads at the same time and place on Wednesday; Jacqueline Wang visits on Friday.)
