John Maus hasn’t released any new material since 2011, but that’s slightly irrelevant to me since I’d actually never heard of him before his name popped up on the Columbus marquee the other week. There’s a lot of synth shimmer and echoed vocals that aren’t super easy to decipher; it sounds less like the 1980s and more like the swarms of bands from the early 2000s that everyone insisted sounded like the 1980s, if that makes any sense. (He was in Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti for a while but then went to Hawaii to get a PhD in political philosophy.) I like it. Gary War – another alumnus of Mr. Pink’s touring band – opens.
